Option 1: a crew haul-away, priced by the cubic yard
With a haul-away, the crew loads the material and takes it in one trip. Heavy material is priced by the cubic yard, because weight rather than space is what limits the truck. Junk Alert's prices, before HST, for a load of one material:
- 1 cubic yard: $350
- 2 cubic yards: $425
- 3 cubic yards: $500
- 4 cubic yards: $575
- 5 cubic yards: $650
A mix of dirt, concrete and brick adds $50. A mixed load containing asphalt adds $75.
A haul-away suits you when:
- The work is done. The pad is broken up or the dig is finished, and the pile just needs to leave.
- You don't want to lift it. Concrete and brick are hard on backs and wheelbarrows, and a crew loads it in a fraction of the time.
- There is no room for a bin. Semis and row houses with a short driveway, or none at all, often have nowhere for a bin to sit.
Option 2: a fill bin you load yourself
A fill bin is a small roll-off dumpster for heavy material. It is dropped on your driveway, you load it as the work goes, and it is picked up when you are done. Rentals include up to 7 days unless otherwise stated. Prices before HST:
| Size |
Clean fill |
Asphalt only |
Mixed fill |
Mixed with asphalt |
| 4 yard |

Clean fill means one material, such as only concrete or only soil. Delivery and any extra days are charged separately.
A fill bin suits you when:
- The work runs over several days. You or your contractor can load as each section comes out.
- You have help on site. A landscaping or interlock crew can fill a bin as part of the job.
- The driveway has room for the bin and for the truck to set it down and lift it again.

Why fill bins are smaller than garbage bins
Concrete, brick and soil weigh far more per yard than drywall or household junk. That is why fill bins come in 4 and 5 yard sizes rather than the 14 to 22 yard sizes used for renovation garbage. Heavy material reaches a bin's weight limit long before it fills the space, so a small bin is the practical size.
For the same reason, keep heavy material out of a regular garbage bin. Our standard dumpster rates do not accept concrete, dirt, brick or asphalt on the flat-rate option, and heavy loads on the other options are charged by weight. If the job produces both heavy fill and lighter debris, ask about splitting them.
Keeping the price down
A few habits make either option cheaper:
- Keep materials separate. One material costs less than a mix, whether it is hauled or binned. Stack concrete in one pile and soil in another.
- Keep asphalt apart. Any load containing asphalt carries the highest surcharge.
- Measure before you call. A rough length, width and depth of the pile is enough for a cubic-yard estimate. Photos help too.
- Keep hazardous material out. Paint, fuel, solvents and anything suspected of containing asbestos cannot go in a haul-away or a bin.
